Thanks Chuck! I had the pleasure of getting to know - albeit superficially -- both E. Wayne and Bernie. Both inspiring in their own way.
It was a high honor for my youngest daughter to receive the "Bernie Saggau Award" when she graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High. It recognized that she was a good athlete, but more importantly, was a good teammate and citizen.
Your words about Bernie captured him and his outlook perfectly. He saw the value in participation. Winning was nice but not essential. His values are what this world needs a whole lot more of.
Fabulous character studies of disappearing institution builders, at one time ubiquitous across the Midwest, now undermined, deliberately by money and power dedicated to eliminating the engaged citizen—members of the Team.
Chuck - I also feel "a high point of my career" was the opportunity to help Bernie create the Iowa Hall of Pride. He impacted many thousands positively. Thank you for posting your tribute today!
This was very interesting. I loved competing in sports in high school. I didn’t know about this guy.
