Nearly everything about this New Yorker's life – except bicycling – was so different from our lives. That’s a big reason so many of us in Iowa came to love him.
1997 was my first RAGBRAI. We stopped overnight at my dad’s house in Bloomfield. I’d migrated to Chicago, and by chance connected with the Chicago Urban Bicycling Society. It was part of my 50th birthday celebration. Like Barry Katz, I was not the greatest at staying in shape, so I had to have a bike that travelled the most distance with the least amount of physical effort. I’m still riding my Carrera triple-crank with Campy gears.
Great story, Chuck. I love reading about all the incredible people you've met on RAGBRAI.
