Two special opportunities for paid subscribers
Another "Office Lounge" Zoom session this Friday, Nov. 24, at 12 noon CT, and our Dec. 7 holiday party at the former Iowa governors' mansion, Witmer House!
DES MOINES, Iowa — We are hosting another "Office Lounge" Zoom session this Friday, Nov. 24, at 12 noon CT for those seeking a good conversation before we all dive into football for the rest of this Thanksgiving weekend.
All paid subscribers to my “Iowa Boy” Chuck Offenburger columns on Substack, or paid subscribers to any other members of the Iowa Writers Collaborative, are invited.
You probably remember we call these chats the “Office Lounge” because that was the name of the downtown Des Moines bar where so many newsies & newsmakers hung out years ago.
This Friday, we’ll be joined on the Zoom call by native Iowan Ellen Won Steil, author of a debut suspense novel “Fortune,” published by the Amazon imprint Lake Union Publishing. Our Iowa Writers’ Collaborative member, Robert Leonard, will host the call.
Ellen Won Steil
Here’s a snapshot of the book, which is receiving all kinds of early acclaim: “In this explosive novel about a decades-old mystery, shocking revelations of the past and the secrets of three women will be spilled when a small Midwest town announces a DNA Lottery.”
Ellen Won Steil grew up in Iowa in a Korean American family. She earned a degree in journalism from Drake University and a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law. She lives in Minnesota with her husband and two young sons. She believes most good stories have at least a hint of darkness. For more information, visit www.ewsteil.com.

Also, please consider and RSVP, if you can attend, our Iowa Writers Collaborative (IWC) holiday party on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the stately Witmer House, located at 2900 Grand Ave. in Des Moines, for decades the home of Iowa’s governors and their families.
Later, the home was the headquarters of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. It’s now been fabulously restored as an event venue.
I hope as many of you paid subscribers to the “Iowa Boy” Chuck Offenburger columns can join me and my wife Mary Riche, as well as many other members of the IWC and their paid subscribers.
To attend you need to be a paid subscriber, or quickly become one, then RSVP for our holiday event. Hope to see you all there!

Our leader Julie Gammack, who writes multiple columns herself, says that our 40 writers rely on support from, on average, just 10 percent of our total subscribers. Their support affirms the valuable work Iowa Writers’ Collaborative members do to bring stories to readers who share an interest in Iowa. We also want to make it available to all, whether they can pay.
If you can and like what we are doing, please consider becoming a paid subscriber for 1-to-5 of our members.
